Marie Kondo

Marie Kondo

WHO is she? Well, she is most likely a consultant in tidying up a house.

There is a consultant for tidying up a house? Don’t get disoriented. Just read on.

‘Spark Joy’

Memes “Does it spark joy?” have been found everywhere since the TV series became the talk of the town.

What are actually Marie Kondo’s tips for tidying up?

1. Do it by category, not room, location, or other things.

Say, for example, you want to tidy up your clothes. It’s better to work on your clothes in all the storage.

And, according to Kondo, it’s best to start with your clothes as we tend not to have an emotional connection. I doubt it, is it really?

2. Fold vertically

Kondo believes, that when we arrange and fold things vertically, it will save a lot of space for storage, and it will be easier for you to find everything.

There’s always a solution!

3. Organize your own things

This is super duper important; as we are the ones who know where we keep things, right?

So, don’t even think about organizing other people’s things. Unless just one thing—photos.

You can organize your photos together. It’s going to be even more fun, as it will bring up memories of togetherness.

4. Leave ‘the past’ behind

This is the most difficult part. Leave things that don’t say about who we are now.

Still being grateful, you will feel better after that. Live with things that ‘spark joy’.

5. Categorize things

Once you keep things that ‘spark joy’ in your life at present, then categorize them into which ones you want and which ones you need.

Next, keep the things that you use frequently in places that are easier to reach, away from rarely-used items but still needed.

Cleanliness is important!

The faith she adheres to, Shintoism, teaches that being clean and tidy is about mental and spiritual.

Marie Kondo has been a professional cleaning staff since she was 19 years old, showing how much she holds on to Shintoism.

In 2011, Kondo released her book ‘The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up’, which has been reprinted many times, and even translated into dozens of languages of various countries all over the world.

It was then followed by the TV series ‘Tidying Up With Marie Kondo’ at the beginning of 2019.

No one would have guessed earlier that the combination of her hobby of cleaning and tidying up together with the faith she adheres can actually become something: a new career in Kondo’s life.

Her name has been even added as a new verb, the KonMari method. Interesting, isn’t it?

What’s more, Marie Kondo was also one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people, you know.

Though full of controversy, saying that she only makes use of the habit of being lazy for most of us as her source of income, in fact, the KonMari method has been successful in helping many others to rearrange the items that spark our joy in our homes.

Daniel Nehring, a sociologist who studies the self-help industry, said “When big social problems seem to be difficult to handle, the moral grammar provided by entrepreneurs like Marie Kondo and Rhonda Byrne makes it interesting and somehow possible”.

He also added that Kondo did well by showing that simple and practical changes made in a person’s daily routine life can actually have a big impact.

What are you waiting for? Let’s tidy up!
